Kantanka acquires licence to manufacture in Ghana
The highly anticipated Kantanka range of vehicles, built by Ghanaian inventor, Safo Kantanka is set to soon get on the market.
This was confirmed on Monday by Kwadwo Safo Jr., CEO and Executive director of the Kantanka Automobile Company Limited, in a video posted on Instagram and shared on Twitter.
An excited Safo Jr. said "Today is the happiest day in the history of Kantanka...finally...finally, we have our manufacturer's licence."
"The sky is the limit," he added. In an earlier interview some weeks ago, the young pilot disclosed that the company now has the capacity to produce up to 120 cars a month.
Should the commercial sale of Kantanka vehicles begin this year, it will be the first ever commercial outing since Apostle Kwadwo Safo begun his inventions more than two decades ago.
The company, Great Kosa Suaye Technological Centre, says it now has installations at its Gomoa Mpota factory to produce enough vehicles for the Ghanaian market.
During an interview on Viasat1 morning show This Morning, Kwadwo Safo Jr. revealed that celebrities including John Dumelo and James Gardiner have already ordered their vehicles.
Kwadwo Safo Jr. earlier explained the reason for the delay in launching onto the Ghanaian market. He told international news Al Jazeera: "We have delayed ... going commercial because Africans and Ghanaians in general have the perception that once it is from Ghana, it is not good - durability is not assured, safety is not guaranteed. So we have decided to use the products ourselves and make sure they are good to go and standardised before we hit the market.
"I was in Brazil about six months ago and I was in tears. The whole of Rio de Janeiro was packed with Marcopolo buses ... and these are buses that were assembled and made in Brazil.
"They patronise it. In India they encourage made-in-India vehicles - like Mahindra - and that's my dream to one day see Kantanka cars on the streets of Accra, Kumasi and all over. I will be fulfilled," a visibly euphoric Safo Jnr pointed out.
