Samsung Donates 3,000 Smartphones To Support Fight Against Ebola

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. today announced that the company will donate 3,000 smartphones, worth about USD 1 million, to support the ongoing fight against Ebola.<br /><br />The smartphones, to be donated through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA), will be used in the Humanitarian Connectivity Project, the UN’s IT project that utilizes mobile devices to provide humanitarian support in disaster areas.<br /><br />The donated GALAXY S3 Neo Smartphones will be used in 60 Ebola medical clinics in the three worst-hit African countries, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.<br /><br />By installing the UN’s Smart Health Pro mobile application, medical staff can utilize the smartphones to treat patients and collect medical data, while quarantined patients can contact their families using the devices.<br /><br />All donated smartphones will be destroyed once the virusoutbreak has subsided.<br /><br />Samsung is also supporting various efforts to defeat Ebola in Africa, including providing financial support for the purchase of hazmat suits in Ghana and distribution of hand sanitizers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as launching an Ebola SMS text service in South Africa.<br /><br /><br /><br />Source: Peacefmonline.com

The Kiss Kiss hitmaker posted the controversial comment to Twitter.com on Monday, writing, "I don't know... But I think this Ebola epidemic is a form of population control. S**t is getting crazy bruh (sic)" before adding, "Let me shut my black a** up!"<br />

The post has sparked a wave of criticism from charities working to stop the spread of the deadly disease, which has killed more than 4,000 people in West Africa since the outbreak began earlier this year (14).<br />
<br />
Jane Moyo, a spokeswoman for British charity Action Aid, has branded Brown "thoughtless" and urged him to make a substantial donation to the fight against Ebola to make ammends.<br />

She tells WENN, "He has obviously ignored Twitter's key rule: Think before you tweet. This is a global emergency about three countries struggling with a deadly disease, countries whose health systems are under immense strain. This is obviously nothing to do with population control but is a serious, deadly situation. At the moment we do not need thoughtless phrases which reach out to Chris Brown's many followers and do not add understanding to the cause... It was unfortunate that he said it in the first place. What would be fantastic is if Chris Brown could donate to a charity working on Ebola and encourage his followers to do the same."<br />

Red Cross spokesman Henry Makiwa has gone a step further by accusing Brown of putting further lives in danger. He tells WENN, "There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, however the highly infectious virus can be prevented from spreading by following infection control procedures... Statements to the contrary are not only inaccurate, but also risk having a negative impact on the large-scale and life-saving response the Red Cross - together with other organisations and governments in West Africa - are carrying out. Now is a critical time to scale up the response to the crisis and such comments are an unhelpful distraction from life-saving work."<br />

Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has revealed he will sue the website responsible for a recent false publication about him.<br />

 An entertainment online platform reported Tuesday, October 7, that the 
actor contracted the deadly Ebola virus disease while he was in 
Monrovia, Liberia's capital, shooting the sequel to his movie ‘Bendu 
Sudan’.<br />
<br />
 Social media commentary following the publication also suggested that 
Vicker had been quarantined in the Ebola-hit West African country and 
denied access back home to Ghana.<br />
<br />
 Speaking on Starr 103.5 FM Friday, October 10, the ‘Neat Job’ actor said the report affected his family badly.<br />
<br />
 “The worst thing about being popular is when rumours are spread about you for no reason”, he said.<br />
<br />
 “But this was a full blown article. Not a rumour. That’s the most 
disgusting bit of it. Garbage! It was just ridiculous but my worry 
wasn’t really me. My worry was my kids, how they took it.”<br />
<br />
 According to Vicker, his daughter came home from school after the news 
broke to tell him a school mate was asking questions about her father’s 
health.<br />
<br />
 “These things get to my wife. She gets a little more worried than I 
get” and that is why “we will be serving them soon... They can get ready
 to be served”, he declared.<br />
<br />
 Vicker said he is motivated to sue because he wants to promote responsible journalism.<br />
<br />
 “The good thing is not necessarily what I’m going to make from them. 
That is not the primary goal. I want to put a stop to all these false 
stories that go out now and again.<br />
<br />
 "They’ve done it one too many times to me and a number of my other 
colleagues in showbiz. I want them to stop such [journalism]”.<br />
