WhatsApp users can now rest assured that their messages are among the most secure around.

The popular messaging app has partnered with top security software maker Open Whisper Systems to add end-to-end encryption by default.

This means that only the sender and receiver can read the messages sent through the app, using Open Whisper System's encryption protocol.

Users will not notice any difference on the surface and do not need to activate anything.

The protocol is currently limited to Android messages for the moment, but there are plans to add support for group chat and media messages, as well as other platforms such as iOS next.

Open Whisper Systems was co-founded by security researcher Moxie Marlinspike and roboticist Stuart Anderson in 2010, before being acquired by Twitter in November 2011.

Its software has been praised by the likes of Edward Snowden, who recently said in a virtual interview for the New Yorker Festival: "Don't send your texts unencrypted. Use programmes like Redphone, like Silent Circle - anything by Moxie Marlinspike and Open Whisper System."
